Catawampus

John Dewey states, “…Balance and harmony [are] attained through rhythm. Equilibrium comes about not mechanically and inertly but out of, and because of, tension.”

Our reality consists of different worlds (culturally, metaphysically, etc.) that interact at different levels. These new works explore the relationships of entities from these worlds. Sometimes these entities intersect and overlap; other entities appear to dominate and perhaps intimidate, repelling other entities out of the picture plane as if to intentionally avoid contact. The overlapping of layers, opaque and transparent, question the impact these entities have on reality at different levels, even if they are unnoticeable.  I explore this concept in the paintings and drawings through the use of tension, which is created by tangents, off-centering elements, and forcing unrelated elements into the same space.
